Echando Pa’lante ~ Moving Forward
The Latina Program at W.O.M.A.N., Inc. offers case management, accompaniments, and comprehensive services to Spanish-speaking survivors of domestic violence. It also houses the group Echando Pa’lante (Moving Forward). Members of Echando Pa’lante have accessed our services – case management, therapy, support groups, crisis line–and as a result, were able to leave their abusive relationships. However, they want to continue receiving support at W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Thus, once per month a community organization comes to Echando Pa’lante to offer a workshop, training or presentation about a topic the participants requested, all in Spanish. In the past few months, these survivors have received trainings to start their own businesses, learned about their rights pertaining to immigration and how to be a domestic violence educator, and participated in a women’s health bingo about early signs of breast cancer. At our next meeting, Impact Bay Area will offer a self-defense workshop for women.
Perhaps more important, Echando Pa’lante members are given a space to create their own community of survivors who are empowered and whose children are safe. In addition to the workshop or training, Echando Pa’lante members decided they want to have social time so every month we also dedicate an hour to connect around a community potluck.
The main focus is to help these survivors ensure that the cycle of abuse is completely absent from their lives, and the lives of their children. At the same time, Echando Pa’lante members are helping W.O.M.A.N., Inc. to evaluate its services and provide feedback on program revisions.
Echando Pa’lante is the perfect example of how survivors can get out of abusive relationships and move forward if given the necessary support. Support W.O.M.A.N., Inc. offers.
