If you read our interview with W.O.M.A.N., Inc. staff member Blase Hents (published on April 1), you probably remember that he is an accomplished artist. During the whole month of April, the Fairfax Community Library will be exhibiting his new work. Please join us for the reception on Saturday, April 6th, from 3 pm to 5 pm. The library is located at 2097 Sir Francis Drake Blvd, Fairfax, CA.
Blase will be exhibiting work under his Buddhist monk name, losangmonlam. He began practicing Tibetan Buddhism after meeting His Holiness Dalai Lama on a trip to India in 1992. Eight years later he was ordained losangmonlam, a monk of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition, later taking full ordination with HH Dalai Lama in in Dharamsala, India.
His art in the field of video installation included shows in the Bay Area in the early 1990s. He also honed his visual skills by working as a graphic designer. When given the practice to cast 400,000 Buddha images, he found the Tsa Tsa Studio—Center for Tibetan Sacred Art, where he taught workshops and was commissioned to undertake several “Buddha Walls” in the Bay Area.
In January of 2010, he resigned his community life as a monk to offer service in the larger world community.
losangmonlam remains in the Bay Area as an artist, painting and writing. His reflections draw upon the world’s spiritual traditions integrating Buddhist principles into the cultural and spiritual experience of the individual practitioner, his students, friends, and colleagues. With over 20 years of practice and study both as a monastic and layperson, he brings a unique and generous perspective to his art.
losangmonlam’s paintings evolve as he continues to use the form of art as expression and meditation. He continues to express his spiritual journey, no longer within a religious community, but rather in engagement with fellow human beings. His paintings reflect this journey, within and without.
