Help Domestic Violence Survivors Find Peace by Donating to CROC

In 1984 W.O.M.A.N., Inc. partnered up with Tanya Neiman of the Volunteer Legal Services Program of the San Francisco Bar Association and together established a restraining order clinic, which today is now known as the Cooperative Restraining Order Clinic (CROC).

CROC is a pro bono restraining order clinic, which helps domestic violence survivors in San Francisco get restraining orders against their abusers. Their services are free and strictly confidential.

Clients start the process by meeting one-on-one with an interviewer who prepares the necessary paperwork for a restraining order. CROC offers interpreters for clients who do not speak English or Spanish and in addition, childcare is also provided if needed.

During the last 17 years CROC has assisted 15,236 survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking.

Emberly C. Cross, coordinating attorney, shares one specific case from the last 17 years since she first took the position in 1996.

“I remember the woman we obtained a restraining order for whose husband had beaten her so badly she was permanently disabled and disfigured, who tried not to smile because she was afraid her face would scare people.”

She goes on to describe those people who did not have the same fate as the women she spoke of above. It is these people, Cross claims, which inspire her to continue on her long endeavor.

“I keep a list on the bulletin board above my desk of our clients who have been murdered by their batterers.  This list saddens me and motivates me.  It motivates me to continue this work, to continue trying to reach survivors as early as possible… before it reaches a fatal level.”

If you believe that CROC makes a valuable contribution to our community, please consider making a tax-deductible contribution today to support their emergency legal services.  Consider making a monthly gift of $17, or a one-time gift of $170, or a donation of $250 to fund our legal services for one client.

You can call 415-255-0165 to schedule an appointment for an upcoming CROC Clinic or for more information, check out their Facebook page.
