A local Bay Area sorority, the Lambda Epsilon Graduate Chapter of Lambda Omicron Chi Christian Sorority, Inc., has thoughtfully chosen anti-domestic violence movement as their main philanthropic cause. Within the last several months, they have been working very closely with W.O.M.A.N., Inc. specifically by actively participating in our Community Education Series and most recently, by hosting fundraising events to help us sustain critical services for domestic violence survivors.
This October, as a tribute to Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the sorority is hosting two very different, yet all the same, very innovative fundraisers.
Their first event was a Self-Defense workshop which took place on Saturday, October 19th and included an educational presentation by W.O.M.A.N., Inc.’s Outreach Volunteers, Annie Fisher & Gina Li on “Domestic Violence 101.” The presentation provided a broad overview of what domestic violence exactly means–what it may encompass (i.e. physical, emotional, religious, sexual & institutional abuse), some common misconceptions, and in what ways W.O.M.A.N., Inc.’s services may help. The Self-Defense workshop combined with the educational presentation both sought to help not only empower survivors of domestic violence, but also to help empower the general public through an increased awareness and subsequently, preparedness of domestic violence issues.
Their second event is a “Stay-At-Home Tea Party” Fundraiser which kicked off this week and will continue until the end of this year. This type of fundraiser is fairly laid-back and does not even require that donors leave the comforts of their home! The general premise involves sending out packages of tea, along with information about W.O.M.A.N., Inc. and an optional donation request return envelope. Recipients are invited to enjoy the complimentary tea at their own convenience, while reflecting on anti-domestic violence services the optional donation will benefit. One of the most notable benefits of this type of fundraiser is the convenience for all community members to make a potential contribution; often times, many people who really want to support a cause are not able to do so simply because they are unable to be physically present at the fundraising event. In this way, a “Stay-At-Home Tea Party” Fundraiser enables everyone to “attend” the Tea Party at their own time/place.
What innovative ways to raise funds to help support services for domestic violence survivors! From all of us at W.O.M.A.N. Inc., we would like to extend a big THANK YOU to the Lambda Epsilon Graduate Chapter of Lambda Omicron Chi Christian Sorority, Inc.! We are consistently humbled by the greater community for their support in abolishing domestic violence!
