Meet a W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Volunteer: Ebti Shedid

Tell us a bit about yourself

My name is Ebtihal Shedid. I was born and raised in Cairo. I was a translator for 10 years and 2 years ago I switched careers and now I am a full time Photographer. I love languages, people and food.

How did you first learn about W.O.M.A.N., Inc. & what opportunities have you been involved in at the organization?

When I moved to CA, first thing on my list was find a domestic violence (DV) organization to work with. I almost joined an organization in Seattle, but I had to move, so coming here I googled DV organization and WOMAN INC was the first result. I checked it out and instantly liked the mission and the work they do. I have been volunteering as a DV peer counselor on the hotline for almost a year now and I recently started meeting with clients in person for peer counseling sessions.

What propelled you to volunteer with us & what motivates you to continue?

I was in situation once, where I wanted to help someone in a DV situation and was shocked by how difficult it is to navigate such situations. I then decided I want to learn more about DV and maybe even try and help people who face it. If 1 in 4 women are subjected to DV, it means that it’s a very urgent and relevant issue in the community.I keep doing this after seeing how even very little support to a survivor can go a long way. I also believe that everyone should find a way to engage in the community they live in. We share a space and we share the human experience and everyone should be able to find 2-4 hours a week to give back to the community they live in.

Working with survivors has taught me, that often people simply need someone they can talk to without them being judged. It’s such a simple request and I wish more friends and family would have the patience to just listen without judging. As for “the solution” it’s not on them, survivors are strong and they create the solutions that fit them best.
