Please join us in congratulating Mary Martinez on her promotion to Associate Director at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.! Mary originally joined W.O.M.A.N., Inc. as a support line volunteer back in February of 2008. Due to her hard work, commitment, and passion, she quickly progressed in her work and become a strong leader of the organization. Due in part to her commitment and creativity, we have transitioned to a “distributed leadership” model that has changed the tide of W.O.M.A.N., Inc.’s decision making processes, and stance in the field. Mary’s strong and steady presence at W.O.M.A.N., Inc. has been pivotal as we moved through many changes and transitions at the organization.

Mary is passionate about the intersections of violence; she is ardent in her approach to ending domestic violence and centers race in organizational operations, direct service and in creating collaborations across nonprofit sectors.

In addition to her exceptional work at W.O.M.A.N., Inc., Mary is involved in innovative projects outside of the organization. Mary is a member of The Network Weaving Learning Lab project, which seeks to build strong networks within the field and across movements, and the Art as Liberation project which seeks to explore arts as a medium for transforming community and survivor narratives on domestic violence.
Team W.O.M.A.N., Inc. is enthusiastic about Mary’s promotion, and know she will continue to help us grow and develop as an organization and as people. Congratulations and thank you, Mary!

Dismantling & Rebuilding: Celebrating Jill Zawisza’s 20 Years of Leadership

Dismantling & Rebuilding is about anti-oppression, intersectional feminism, collaboration across difference, and holding collective power. Inspired by Audre Lorde’s observation that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house,” the event promotes stronger, safer communities rooted in intersectionality and inclusion.

JillAbout Jill:

Jill has worked as an advocate and leader in the domestic violence field for 20 years. She has dedicated 10 years to W.O.M.A.N., Inc., including five years as our Executive Director. Jill leads by building strong teams and putting people first. She’s created a powerful, resilient W.O.M.A.N., Inc. community that models our vision for the stronger, safer communities we strive to build for all survivors of domestic violence.

Meet, Stephanie, Our New Latinx Program Co-Manager!


Please join us in welcoming Stephanie Colorado to the W.O.M.A.N., Inc. team in her new role as Latinx Program Co-Manager! Stephanie has been connected with us for quite some time now, and we are so excited to have her back as a core member of our team. Keep reading to learn more about her experience with us and the larger anti-violence movement:

Stephanie started out as a volunteer with W.O.M.A.N., Inc. in the summer of 2012 and has worked with survivors of domestic violence ever since.  She also is a Sexual Assault 10532463_10101091247198778_1536387025699013486_nCounselor at San Francisco Women Against Rape, where she worked as a Survivor Advocate supporting survivors of sexual violence.  She is now working as the Latina Program Co-Manager offering in-depth case management to Spanish-speaking survivors.


Stephanie comenzó como voluntaria con W.O.M.A.N., Inc. en el verano de 2012 y ha trabajado con sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica desde entonces. También es Consejera de Asalto Sexual con Mujeres Contra la Violación Sexual de San Francisco, donde trabajó con sobrevivientes de violencia sexual. Ahora trabaja como Co-Directora del Programa Latina ofreciendo manejo de casos a profundidad para sobrevivientes.

W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Advocate Highlight: Lucy Chen

1) How long have you been involved with W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?unnamed-1

I have been involved with W.O.M.A.N. Inc., for almost 4 years I believe.

2) What have been your roles at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?

I have been a crisis counselor volunteer and a case manager assistant for Paola during Latina Program. I have also volunteered in some administrative areas like grant research and participated in different meetings and events from the community.

3) How did you come into domestic violence field?

In city college giving DV presentations to college and high school students.  After my associate degree in Psychology I decided to volunteer in W.O.M.A.N., Inc and get involved in anti-violence work.

4) What do you enjoy most about your work at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.? What do you love most about working with survivors? 

I enjoy being part of a great team that supports their staff and volunteers with any concerns or questions. I love the strength and wisdom I gain from each survivor I work with. Each of their stories are filled with so much courage and love despite adversities. It is an honor for me to serve them and that, in itself, motivates me to continue this work. 🙂

5) Can you share a fun fact about yourself? 

A fun fact: Im obsessed with science fiction and cute animals

Staff Highlight: Alicia Padillapaz

1) How long have you been working at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?
I was a volunteer for W.O.M.A.N. Inc for a little under a year and a half and then went to work for The Riley Center for an additional year and a half. I always stayed in touch with the staff here as they are all amazing and do tremendous work. I’m glad to be back as part of the team!
2) What do you do at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?
 I assist in the volunteer training and will begin recruiting and interviewing volunteers for our upcoming training. I also oversee the Education and Outreach program along with providing support on the crisis line and drop ins as needed.
3) How did you come into this profession?IMG_6443
My mom was a volunteer for W.O.M.A.N. Inc, and a Case Manager for They Riley Center a little over 20 years ago so I’ve pretty much been an advocate since I was little. I’m passionate about Social Justice. During my undergrad at SFSU, I interned for a prevention education program called The S.A.F.E. Place (Sexual Abuse Free Environment) and became interested in working with survivors of Domestic Violence. I absolutely love supporting survivors whether it be providing peer counseling, referrals or advocacy. One of the many parts I love about this position is I also get to train incoming volunteers and community members and provide them the training and education they need to provide support for survivors in their communities.
4) What are you looking forward to as W.O.M.A.N., Inc. continues to grow?
I look forward to seeing our programs reach all communities and of course educating more community members to serve survivors and their families. I’m proud to be a part of this movement!
5) What do you enjoy most about working at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?
STAFF! I feel blessed to work with an amazing team! The work environment here is very empowering and supportive and I love the energy in the office. I enjoy working with the wonderful pool of volunteers and working with all the various agencies in our community!  I am truly honored to work with an agency who’s mission and values reflect my passion.

W.O.M.A.N., Inc. Staff Highlight: Joy LeRoy

1) How long have you been working at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?

I completed the forty-hour training in March of 2013 and began volunteering on the support line shortly thereafter. At the beginning of September 2014, I was offered a paid position

2) What do you do at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?

I am the Support Line Program assistant, so I handle scheduling advocates for coverage for the support line and I still take support line shifts.
3) How did you come into this profession?

I took a few women’s studies classes at City College of San Francisco and one of the classes required me to volunteer at a CBO or community based organization such as W.O.M.A.N., Inc. I thought that I had missed the deadline to participate in the forty-hour training so I had resigned myself to being a short-term volunteer, but when I came in for my interview I was asked if I wanted to attend the training and become an actual volunteer. I gladly accepted and I’ve been a volunteering ever since. Then in September I was offered a staff position, which I saw as an opportunity to become more involved and knowledgeable about W.O.M.A.N., Inc. and the work that we do.

4) What are you looking forward to as W.O.M.A.N., Inc. continues to grow?

I look forward to being able to find survivors from any background resources to help them be safer, happier, and free from violence!

5) What do you enjoy most about working at W.O.M.A.N., Inc.?

The thing I enjoy the most about working at W.O.M.A.N., Inc. is the freedom I feel to be myself!

Meet W.O.M.A.N., Inc.’s New Support Line Program Assistants

W.O.M.A.N., Inc.’s 24-hour support line receives thousands of calls each year and it’s the program that most volunteers choose to volunteer in at our agency.  The coordination alone that goes into scheduling a 24-hour support line takes quite a bit of time.  When my title was Crisis Line Supervisor, I would coordinate the support line and schedule and train new volunteers for the program, but I didn’t have much time to do anything else. Soon the Executive Director Intern, Tania, began helping me with coordinating the support line schedule. Tania later became the Program Assistant, where her job duties included support line scheduling, development, and administration work. She definitely did a lot for us including, eventually taking over all scheduling for the support line.

As of July 1, Tania transitioned from W.O.M.A.N., Inc. to pursue some life goals and that’s when Joy and Stephanie came into the picture.  Joy and Stephanie both began as volunteers, then were invited to become paid support line advocates.  I was confident bringing them on as Support Line program assistants because after working with them for a couple of years I was confident with their skills, and I have a great connection with both of them. One skill required for coordinating the Support Line is attention to detail, which they both have. Besides coordinating the support line schedule which includes communicating with volunteers, paid advocates, and the answering service, Joy and Stephanie are supporting me with program trainings, agency daily operations, and administration work.

I’m so excited to have them support the line as well as the organization.  Thanks for joining W.O.M.A.N., Inc.
